Need help right now?

For someone else

How to check in on a mate.

You don’t need the right words. You just need to notice, ask and listen.

If you think someone is in immediate danger, call 999.

  1. Notice

Gone quiet, snappier than usual, not turning up, or just not themselves. Trust your gut.

  2. Ask, then ask again

“You alright?” usually gets “Yeah, fine.” Try: “You don’t seem yourself, mate. What’s going on?” Then give them time.

  3. Listen, don’t fix

You don’t need answers. Let them talk, don’t judge, and don’t rush to change the subject.

  4. Point them somewhere

Suggest a next step together: a chat with their GP, the SPEAK community, or one of the free services above.
